Damaged tile, cracked and broken exposing the roof membrane, allowing the rain to access the roof space, where it will cause damage, especially if left.
Cracked tiles can be a very severe safety issue, as tiles in general are heavy and, you don't want one, or a part of one falling and causing any damage to the roof or anything below it. Tiles are particularly vulnerable in heavy winds or disrepair.
1. When replacing a broken or missing tile we ensure we have the correct replacement tile to match the existing ones. The most common tile types are concrete and terracotta.
2. Once we have safely reached;the broken tile, we need to slightly lift the tiles that overlap the one to be removed. we do this by using two pieces of timber to hold them up. Then, we use a brick trowel to lift up the broken over the batten underneath and slide it down and out.
3. We then place your new tile onto the brick trowel and reverse the steps for removing the tile. Be sure to place the overlapping tiles back into position.
4. We ensure the tile is securely in place.
5. Have a quick check across the roof while you're there to survey any other potential damage.

Brighter-Homes offer roof repairs and replace tiles, however, there are occasions where the roof is beyond a little maintenance and may require removing and rebuilding.
We remove and replace old or damaged tiles, where necessary. We also replace missing tiles, however sometimes the roof needs a complete overhaul, where we can supply a re-roofing service.
In the case of a re-build we remove the old tiles/roof, remove and replace the breathable membrane, replace battens and re-tile ensuring everything is installed correctly and safely.
We replace damaged, missing or loose tiles. We undertake minor repairs to complete new roof replacements, if necessary.
For a complete new roof replacement we remove all the old tiles, wooden batons and breathable membrane.
We then install and fit a new breathable membrane.
Install and secure new treated batons in preparation for the tiles.
We install complete new roofs.
Over time, weathering and decay causes deterioration in the joints between masonry. This allows water penetration which can cause significant damage.
Re-pointing is the process of renewing the mortar joints between bricks or masonry.
Having damaged joints between your bricks or masonry, re-pointing prevents water penetration and the consequential damage if it is left.
Re-pointing will also enhance the external appearance of the building.
The picture above shows a new roof on the left and the roof on the right is fairly new but the chimney has been neglected and shows signs of the mortar missing, crumbling and the bricks becoming unstable.
Re-pointing would be a cheaper alternative than leaving it, where it may get to the point of becoming unsafe and risk damaging the roof or falling on to passers by or damaging cars.
Also note the plant life growing out of the chimney pots.
Most chimney damage or decay starts from the top down. The top cement flaunching between you and your neighbour’s chimney pots should be laid in one continuous section without cracks/split. The cement flaunching should be cambered so rain water runs off the chimney to the outer edge.
The chimney stack is exposed to the full force of our weather. To withstand such conditions, chimney stacks must be maintained to the highest standard.
When repairs are required they should be made with the correct materials by an experienced contractor using appropriate tools and safety systems.
